This teaching format is in the traditional teacher-student approach or gurukul in India for those who want hands-on training in Ayurvedic health-care (kayachikitsa) by an experienced Vaidya.  Most courses on Ayurveda are more focused on theory more than clinical application, or too academic, with references to original sanskrit texts requiring an understanding of Sanskrit terminology. The goals of these workshops are to help students and practitioners of Ayurveda to better grasp the clinical applications of Ayurveda and provide a model of private practice.   The Workshops are straightforward and clear without much Sanskrit terminology.

The purpose and intention of this program is to help fulfill a growing need for skilled and professional Ayurvedic practitioners, to address the plethora of health issues in modern society. Khabir

Purgation Therapy - Virechana

Purgation Therapy (Virechana)

A Traditional  Ayurveda Purification and Detoxification Procedure

Treatment details can be provided by appointment in Ojai or Zoom with herbal products mailed.

What is Virechana?

Virechana is the second procedure in the sequence of Panchakarma (Ayurveda Detoxification Program), mainly aimed at reducing Pitta Dosha and toxic accumulation in the GI tract, liver and gallbladder.  In simple words, Virechana is that procedure which expels out congestion and heat through the anal passage. This is the simplest method of Panchakarma and has the most easily observed effects.  It is a safe procedure without side effects that can be easily be done at home with proper preparation and the right herbal formulas.

Health problems commonly treated by Virechana therapy

Based on Ayurveda, Virechana can treat a number of health problems including:

  • Skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis*
  • Rheumatic arthritis*
  • Piles*
  • Abdominal tumor(s)*
  • Worms and other parasites*
  • Gout*
  • Jaundice*
  • Irritable bowel syndrome*
  • Chronic constipation*

In addition, the therapy is often administered to treat the following:

  • Diabetes*
  • Asthma*
  • Goiter*
  • Headaches*
  • Obesity*

The treatment

Virechana therapy is defined as the medicated purgation therapy, which cleanses the Pitta and purifies blood, by clearing the toxins from the body. The treatment concentrates on the toxins that are accumulated in the liver and gall bladder. Along with advance preparation, this treatment is a flushing of the whole gastro-intestinal track with herbal laxatives.  This powerful treatment quickly reduces body heat (pitta); liver, gallbladder and colon congestion and helps improve rashes, itching, skin inflammation and acne while also improving digestion and boosting metabolism.*

The procedure

Before the procedure, internal Oleation is followed for three to seven days to loosen toxins and prepare for the actual treatment.  Additionally, a light dosha specific diet is prescribed before the treatment.  However, certain factors like body and mind constitution, age of the person, digestive state should be considered, to properly design an effective Virechana therapy as there are many options.

Herbs used for Virechana aim at cleansing the sweat glands, small intestine, colon, stomach, liver and spleen.  A number of herbs are used for the therapy process, which serve as decongestants,  laxatives and purgatives.  Herbal purgative, salt or castor oil can also used for the initial treatment based on individual.  After the treatment, the patient then follows a restricted diet for 7 to 10 days to reestablish the digestive fire (Agni).

The benefits:

  1. Flushes out of the toxins and excess mucus from the GI tract and thus improves digestion.
  2. Clears congestion from the liver and thus improves metabolism and fat digestion.
  3. Relieves many gastro-intestinal disorders.
  4. Improves the condition of skin disorders,  rashes & allergies.

Therapy requires one private consultations (in Ojai, CA or by Skype) plus herbal products.

Vomiting Therapy: Vamana

Therapeutic Vomiting Therapy (Vamana)

A Traditional Ayurveda Purification and Detoxification Procedure

Treatment details can be provided by appointment in Ojai or Zoom with herbal products mailed.

What is Vamana?

Vamana is one of the five therapies of Panchakarma in Ayurveda. Vamana is therapeutic vomiting which is a medicated emesis. This is an emesis treatment done through the oral route to eliminate excess mucus by means of therapeutic vomiting and is recommended for patients suffering from chronic asthma, tonsillitis, anemia, chronic indigestion, sinus problems, cough, and cold.   People suffering from edema, epilepsy, skin diseases, fever, loss of appetite, and lymphatic obstruction can find this therapy beneficial.

This treatment is done for the aggravated Kapha dosha, which dislodges the toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.  The Kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract are effectively removed by Vamana.  Waste products and congestion are thus eliminated through the mouth.  After vomiting, the sinus is cleared, which in turn provides relief from congestion, wheezing, and breathlessness.

Health problems commonly treated by Vamana therapy

Based on Ayurveda, Virechana can treat a number of health problems and uproot them, so that they do not occur again including:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection*
  • Chronic indigestion*
  • Sinus problems*
  • Cough and cold*
  • Asthma*

Latest studies in the field of medical science suggest that certain symptoms of asthma can be cured by this highly effective form of Panchakarma.

In addition, the therapy is often administered to treat the following:

  • Edema*
  • Loss of appetite*
  • Diabetes*
  • Obesity*
100% organic treatment- Khabir's clinic

The procedure

The objective of Vamana therapy is to gently induce vomiting to get rid of the mucus that causes excess Kapha.   The person feels better after vomiting a few times.  This is followed by the internal administration of ghee treatment and a steam bath or warm shower. After performing Vamana therapy, the patient should take a rest and not consume heavy food.  If Vamana is done properly, the person feels relaxed and able to breathe freely. Lightness in the chest is often experienced after undergoing the therapy. The person thinks clearly, develops a clear voice and good appetite. All the symptoms of congestion vanish away after the proper Vamana therapy.  The treatment can be easily done at home with a proper understanding of the steps and the medicated drink being provided.

The benefits:

  • Improves breathing.
  • Promotes good appetite.
  • The sinuses are cleared which in turn provides relief from the congestion, wheezing, and breathlessness.
  • It is a highly effective treatment in Asthma
  • Reduction in weight and cholesterol & triglyceride levels.

Therapy requires one private consultation (in Ojai, CA or by Skype) plus herbal products.

In addition, the therapy is often administered to treat the following:

  • Edema*
  • Loss of appetite*
  • Diabetes*
  • Obesity*

The objective

When done properly, Basti is an effective treatment that has very few or no side effects on the body. The medication techniques used for the treatment are known as enemas.  Gnerally, Basti karma can be adopted to people in order to rejuvenate the body, provide strength and longevity.  (According to Ayurveda, the enemas are not suitable for people suffering from shortness of breath, chronic abdominal pain, bleeding from rectum, cough, diarrhea and severe anemia.)

Types of Basti:

There are Eight main types of basti, each with their own indications and contra-indications, however, here are the three types commonly provided:

Herbal Decoction Enema (Aasthapan-Nirhua Basti): This type of treatment is predominantly used to treat arthritic conditions and nervous disorders, obstruction of urine, stools and flatus; amenorrhoea and infertility. Herbal decoction and small amounts of oil are used to treat the ailments. This type of Basti karma is not suitable for malnourished and weak people or those suffering from tuberculosis, ascites, peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, dysentery, diabetes, skin diseases and asthma.

Oil Enema (Anuvasan Basti): Warm oil with small amounts of decoction is used in Anuvasan Basti. The treatment rejuvenates the body. People suffering from piles, obesity, intestinal worms, anemia and jaundice should not do Anuvasan Basti.

Nutritional enema (Bruhana Basti): This type of Enema is used for providing deep nutrition in select conditions. Traditionally, highly nutritive substances have been used, such as warm milk, meat broth, bone marrow soup and herbs like shatavari or ashwagandha.

The benefits:

  • Basti karma is highly beneficial in cleansing and detoxifying the body.
  • The strong treatment penetrates deep into the dhatus, while the mild treatment works on the superficial level of dhatus. Both the treatments are beneficial for the body.
  • Secretions in the colon are promoted by Basti karma, thereby ensuring a good health.
  • People suffering from constipation would find the treatment beneficial, because it promotes the liquefaction of ama and mala (waste products) in the colon.
  • The palliative treatment helps the colon expel them. Similar to western enemas, the Basti karma increases colonic peristalsis, producing rapid elimination of the feces

Therapy requires one private consultations (in Ojai, CA or by Skype) plus herbal products.
