Ayurvedic Guidelines to Transition to Spring

According to Ayurveda, spring is considered the "king of seasons"—a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. After the cold, dry winter, our bodies are naturally ready to lighten up, shed excess weight, and cleanse accumulated imbalances.

As the natural world shifts from the cold and dry winter to the warmth and moisture of spring, this change in temperature and humidity impacts the lungs and respiratory system. This can lead to respiratory congestion, breathing difficulties, and colds. If your sinuses were dry during the winter, they will produce excess mucus in the spring to compensate, resulting in congestion. This buildup of mucus (associated with kapha dosha) begins to liquefy and exit the body, leading to symptoms like a runny nose, colds, allergies, hay fever, nasal congestion, and even respiratory infections.

To prevent these issues, it’s crucial to focus on strengthening the immune system and reducing congestion, especially in the respiratory system, during the spring season.

Dietary Guidelines According to Ayurveda

As spring approaches, it is recommended to reduce heavy foods such as meats, potatoes, dairy, and nuts. Limit foods with predominant tastes of sweet, sour, or salty, and instead focus on foods with bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes. Opt for lighter proteins like red lentils, split peas, garbanzo beans, and pinto beans. Incorporate cooked prunes, and enjoy fruits like figs, apples, pears, pineapple, and papaya between meals. Include more cooked leafy greens, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage with every meal. Continue using warming spices such as black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom in your cooking and teas to ignite the digestive fire and support digestion.

Spring is considered a low-grain season, as most grains are not harvested until fall. Reduce or avoid rice, grains, breads, and pastas during this time. Dry grains like organic corn are more suitable for spring’s wet conditions compared to the dry fall season. Additionally, spring is a low-dairy time of year, as dairy can be particularly congestive.

Use small amounts of raw honey as a sweetener, and consider fasting for one day a week if you feel heavy.

Vata Pacifying Diet
In the spring, Vata is balanced by a diet consisting mostly of cooked vegetables, lighter grains, and legume dishes. These meals should be soft, rich in protein, and contain healthy fats or oils. The food should be seasoned with warming spices and served warm or hot to support digestion and balance.

Pitta Pacifying Diet
In the spring, Pitta is balanced by a diet that includes both cooked and raw vegetables, along with hearty grains. To further balance Pitta, enjoy cooling fresh or dried fruits between meals, helping to soothe and calm the internal heat of this dosha.

Kapha Pacifying Diet
In the spring, Kapha is balanced by a diet focused on leafy green vegetables, dry fruits, and dry, light grains. Meals should be seasoned with warming and pungent spices and served warm to stimulate digestion and reduce the excess moisture associated with Kapha.

Spring Health Treatments

According to Ayurveda, each individual requires a unique approach. Choose the treatment that best fits your condition and constitution to support your overall health during the spring season.

  • Sip warm water with fresh lemon juice throughout the day to help dissolve excess congestion in the gastrointestinal tract and support detoxification.
  • Take raw honey between meals with turmeric, ginger powder, and a pinch of black pepper to help reduce congestion and promote healthy digestion.  Drink hot ginger and turmeric tea with honey between meals to warm the body, reduce inflammation, and aid digestion.
  • Cleanse your colon at night using Triphala (an Ayurvedic formula), with extra ginger and honey to support the digestive system and remove toxins.

Spring is a healthy season, except for individuals with a Kapha constitution (congested, heavy, oily, and overweight) or those experiencing Kapha imbalances. Pitta dominant types will enjoy the first half of spring, although the second half may become too hot for them, requiring them to start pacifying their Pitta dosha in late spring. Vata dominant types will appreciate the warmth and moisture of spring unless they have high levels of toxins (ama) and congestion (kapha). All types—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—benefit from some detoxification (shodhana) in spring before the heat of summer arrives. After pacifying the kapha dosha and completing a spring cleanse, most people experience weight loss, elimination of congestion, and increased energy levels.
